Welcome to our camp. The coffee's hot so get ya cup, and pull up a seat by the fire, and let us tell ya about the FREE TRAPPER. Free Trappers, Independent Americans, was a independent mountain man who didn't work for a fur company. For many, Free Trappers of today, offers the opportunity to relive history. A stroll through one of the historic encampments, commonly referred to as a rendezvous, is like walking back into previous centuries. Rendezvous-goers take their pursuit seriously. When fashioning their era clothing, tremendous attention is paid to every detail. The goal is to adorn attire that is authentic in every respect to the period being re-created. One of the more popular rendezvous periods represents the Fur Trade era of the mid 1820's to till 1840.
Rendezvous! Festival trading sessions and a spree that one historian call "Maleness gone berserk."
Each summer, from the 1820's till 1840, the mountain man would leave the mountains to meet one another, traders from St. Louis, and Indians at a selected valley. They swapped pelts, supplies, skulls, Varnish liquor, bets and brags, and racing horses.
And today's rendezvous start from the French and the Indian War to the Fur Trade era. So that's what we are really about. A group of families that enjoy reliving the early 1800's.
John Barnhill,
a.k.a. The Kentucken
